Common questions
The things people actually ask.
Mostly about money, timescales and what happens if it goes wrong. If yours is not here, just ask.
Cost and quotes
How much will my website cost?
A one-page site starts at £300, a full multi-page site at £1,200, and a site with an online shop at £2,000. Those are starting points, not a menu. Once I know what you need, you get a fixed quote, and that is the number you pay.
Do you charge for the first conversation?
No. The first chat costs nothing and there is no obligation afterwards. If I do not think I am the right person for the job, I will say so.
Could the price go up halfway through?
Not without you agreeing to it first. The quote is fixed before any work starts. If you ask for something new partway through, I will tell you what it adds before I build it, and you decide.
What does it cost to keep running?
It depends what it does. A straightforward website is usually a few pounds a month for hosting, plus your domain renewal at roughly £10 to £20 a year. Anything that stores information, like a booking system or a web app, costs more to run, because it needs a database and somewhere safe to keep backups. Either way you get the running cost in writing with the quote, so it is never a surprise later.
Do you take payment up front?
Part of it. Normally a deposit to get started and the balance when you are happy with the finished site. For larger builds we can split it into stages.
How it works
How long does it take?
A one-page site can be a few days. A full site is usually two to four weeks, mostly depending on how quickly content comes together. A web app depends on what it does. You get a date at quote stage, and I keep to it.
What do you need from me?
An idea of what the business does and who you want to reach. Photos and text if you have them. If you do not, that is normal and we work it out together. You do not need to arrive with everything ready.
Do you write the words for me?
I can. Most people find it easier to talk it through and let me draft something, then correct it. You know your business better than I do, so it always ends up sounding like you rather than like me.
I am not technical. Is that a problem?
Not at all. You do not need to understand any of it. My job is to ask sensible questions in plain English and handle the technical side myself.
I do not really know what I need. Where do I start?
Just tell me what is annoying you. That is genuinely enough. A lot of the useful work starts as "this bit of my week is a nightmare" rather than a spec.
Once it is live
Do I actually own it?
Yes. The code, the content and the domain are yours. You can take the whole lot elsewhere whenever you like, and you will not need me to unlock anything.
What if something breaks?
Tell me and I will fix it. If it is something I got wrong, there is no charge for that.
Can I update it myself?
Usually, yes. For a website I can build in a content management system so you can change text, prices and opening times whenever you like. For something more involved, like an app where rates or options change over time, I can add settings pages so you can adjust those without touching anything technical. What makes sense depends on what you expect to change, so it is worth mentioning early on. And if you would rather just send me a message and have it done, that is fine too.
Do you disappear once you have been paid?
No, and I understand why you are asking. Plenty of people have been left high and dry by someone who stopped replying. You will have my mobile number, and I am a local business who would rather keep a good name than dodge an email.
Anything else
I already have a website. Can you fix it rather than start again?
Often, yes. Sometimes a rebuild works out quicker and cheaper than untangling what is there. I will look at it and tell you honestly which makes more sense for you.
Where are you based, and does it matter?
Redditch, Worcestershire. Happy to meet locally if you would rather do things face to face, and equally happy to work with businesses anywhere in the UK.
Do you do AI things, or is that just a buzzword?
Both exist. Some AI genuinely saves time, and plenty of it is being sold to people who do not need it. I will tell you which is which for your business, including when the answer is that you do not need any.
Do you do IT support?
Not as a rule these days, but ask. Depending on the size of the job and what capacity I have, I may well be able to help. If I cannot, I will point you towards someone I have worked with and trust rather than leave you searching. Networks, switches and routing do still come up for clients I am already building something for.
